10 Wrong Ideas About Talent

By Debbie Davis

Are you musically talented?  No?

Do you enjoy music of any kind?  Yes?

Well, excuuuuuse me, but I’d say you’re musically talented.

Lots of people think they have no talent or that their child has no talent and they are probably dead wrong.

Here are some wrong ideas about talent:

  1. If you’re talented, you can teach yourself.
  2. If you’re talented, any teacher should suffice.
  3. If you’re talented , you should be able to learn very fast.
  4. If you’re talented, you wouldn’t get frustrated or discouraged
  5. If you’re talented, you would love to practice.
  6. If you’re talented, you wouldn’t need to practice much.
  7. If you’re talented, you can learn to play lots of instruments with practically no instruction.
  8. If you’re talented, you wouldn’t get stage fright.
  9. If you’re talented, everyone would be able to notice it.
  10. If you’re talented, no one would tell you you’re not talented.

Do any of these ideas sound familiar?  They’re all baloney.

If you want to learn to play an instrument or sing, you can do it.  It does take, time, effort and a good teacher, but you can do it and you can bring this great joy into your life.

“Talent” is the object of myth and misunderstanding.  Forget about whether you’re talented or not and learn to play an instrument.  You can do it!
